We made a mistake when Obama was president of kind of going to sleep because ‘our guy won.’ We shouldn’t do that now that our next guy, Biden, won. Wonder what road to take? Maybe join Indivisible, that activist organization, or some other? I’m open to suggestions. Maybe, like Ann, using our unbelievable space in Soho, we should meet in small groups like “Take Back the Future” did in previous decades to figure things out. —Daniel Goode

Comment on When the Walls of the City Are Shaken: Thinking with Ann Snitow’s Feminist Voice of Uncertainty by Dr. Val Marie Johnson https://nyupress.org/blog/2021/05/10/when-the-walls-of-the-city-are-shaken-thinking-with-ann-snitows-feminist-voice-of-uncertainty/#comment-556 Tue, 11 May 2021 14:52:12 +0000 https://www.fromthesquare.org/?p=14415#comment-556 Thank you for this Kathryn Detwiler, and for your work with Ann. As a New School PhD student I taught my first university level course under the tutelage of Dr. Snitow decades ago at Lang College. I am a white feminist & critical scholar of whiteness who is extremely skeptical of white feminism because of a primary concern with the structured and violent living histories of empire, colonialism, white supremacy, and racial capitalism, but I will never forget dear Ann, and what she and her scholarship taught me in those formative years. And you made me want to read this book!

Comment on An Offering to our Asian Sisters by Delia D. Aguilar https://nyupress.org/blog/2021/04/02/an-offering-to-our-asian-sisters/#comment-555 Wed, 14 Apr 2021 21:06:13 +0000 https://www.fromthesquare.org/?p=14370#comment-555 Excellent piece. Prof. Eisenstein doesn’t hesitate to admit her own inability to distinguish between one Asian from another– the predicament, in fact, of just about every white person. And everyone can learn from what she proposes to do immediately: walk with a female friend for their protection and in solidarity.

Comment on The Future has to be anti-racist, feminist and RED—Covid Says So by Carole Boyce Davies https://nyupress.org/blog/2021/01/06/the-future-has-to-be-anti-racist-feminist-and-red-covid-says-so/#comment-551 Thu, 07 Jan 2021 13:21:50 +0000 https://www.fromthesquare.org/?p=14124#comment-551 Such a lovely testimony from Zillah Eisenstein and her mother’s story, so significant to read too at this point in history when socialism continues to be demonized in the United States. Fortunately there are people like Zillah, her mother and her daughter who push back and remain allies in struggle for a better future for all of us.

Comment on The New US: While Calling Out Trump White Women by Carole Boyce Davies https://nyupress.org/blog/2020/11/16/the-new-us-while-calling-out-trump-white-women/#comment-550 Tue, 17 Nov 2020 14:40:45 +0000 https://www.fromthesquare.org/?p=13992#comment-550 Much needed response to this overwhelming confirmation about a large proportion of white women who are demonstrating again their complicities with white supremacy. We can similarly call out the 29% of Black men who supported and voted for this president in spite of all he said about Black people and the Nigerian evangelical community and the national leadership which supported him and actually held marches in Lagos to demonstrate this. We need new analyses and a definite embrace of the much-maligned left politics to redefine these new alignments
